Worship at PPC

What to expect

We worship in-person and on our YouTube channel Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m.  Our sanctuary is fully accessible, and we have FM audio loops to aid hearing.  We use printed bulletins with large size font but do not currently have screens for projection.  If you need specific accommodations to participate fully, we will welcome your request through the church office.  During the summer months we often gather for worship on the front lawn.

While we use a traditional liturgical style of worship the setting and vibe are cheerful, relaxed, and welcoming.  You will be greeted upon entry into the building, and you are invited to stay for casual refreshments in the foyer following the worship service.  At PPC everyone dresses in the way that is comfortable for them which means that you may find people wearing everything from jeans and sneakers to dresses.  Our pastor and guest preachers may wear street clothes or formal robe.  Please choose what is most comfortable for you.

Wherever you are on your journey with God, whatever your history or status, you are welcome here and you are invited to participate in the service as you are comfortable.  We use a printed order of worship that outlines the service.  Prayers and readings from the Bible are followed by a sermon shared by the Pastor.  Throughout the service we sing hymns that are generally considered more traditional, and our choir or soloist will share a selection of special music.  On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.  Through this shared meal we build deeper communion with God and each other. We welcome all to share in communion as guided by our Presbyterian Church (USA) Book of Order.

Children in Worship

As precious members of our church family, children of all ages are always welcome in worship, including their movement and sounds.  Near the beginning of the worship service children are invited to come forward to hear a Children’s Message from the Pastor.  Throughout the service children are welcome to use the toys and materials in the “Pray and Play” area at the rear of the sanctuary with toys and crafts for children to enjoy and engage in worship at their developmental level. Children are also invited to participate in Church School two (2) Sundays per month following the Children’s Message.

Music

Our gifted church musician, Christine Stevens-Schwind, enhances our worship of God with music of the piano and leads our singing of hymns. We generally use hymns that are considered traditional, yet we welcome more contemporary music as well.  The choir and soloists share an anthem during the service.  Children are also welcome to share their musical offerings.

Participation in the choir is open to all. Choir shares a wonderful camaraderie and lots of laughs. We are always open to new or sporadically participating members.  Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 6:30pm in the sanctuary.  Contact Christine (email link here) if you’d like to give choir a try sometime.

Baptism

In the sacrament of baptism, we are claimed by God’s grace and welcomed into Christ’s church. Baptism of children and adults is celebrated in the context of Sunday worship.  For information about baptism please contact Pastor Twyla.

Holidays and Special Services

Special services are held throughout the year and will vary depending on the event. See our events page for upcoming holidays and special services.

Wedding Policy

A service of Christian marriage is more than a social convention. It is an ordinance of the Church and a witness to the world of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The wedding policy for the Penfield Presbyterian Church is intended to:

  • enable couples married at Penfield Presbyterian Church to understand the nature of their Christian commitment;

  • insure that the facilities of the church are used in keeping with the Directory for Worship of the Book of Order;

  • bear a faithful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
